The Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos once again became the beating heart of African entertainment as the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) unfolded in a dazzling ceremony on Saturday night. Hosted by the charismatic duo of Bovi Ugboma and Nomzamo Mbatha, the star-studded event honoured outstanding achievements in film, television, and digital content creation across the African continent, spanning 32 categories.

The night belonged to My Father’s Shadow, the British-Nigerian debut feature from director Akinola Davies Jr. The critically acclaimed drama, which was already decorated at Cannes, BAFTA, and the British Independent Film Awards, swept five major categories, including Best Movie, Best Director, Best Writing in a Movie, Best Score/Music, and Best Sound/Sound Design. It was a historic victory for an independent African film that had traversed the global festival circuit before claiming Nollywood’s biggest night.

Close behind were To Kill a Monkey and Colours of Fire, each picking up three trophies. The evening also produced a personal milestone: Linda Ejiofor became the first person in AMVCA history to win both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the same year. In another emotional highlight, Lateef Adedimeji dedicated his Best Indigenous Language Film win for Lisabi: A Legend Is Born to his wife, Mo Bimpe, just days after the couple announced the arrival of their triplets.

Veteran Nollywood icons Sola Sobowale and Kanayo O. Kanayo received Industry Merit Awards, while rising star Uche Montana was honoured with the Trailblazer Award.

Second on my list of addictions is Movies.. the only thing I could possibly love more is my Dearest Waakye lol. Nothing else does a better job of reminding me that ANYTHING is possible with the right amount of effort. I have great eye for details and flaws in scripts. Shallow scripts bore me. I am an avid reader. Your everyday Mr Nice guy. Always the last to speak in a room full of smart people. Half Human, half Martian but full MOVIE FREAK.
