Shirley Frimpong-Manso and Peter Sedufia Announce Monumental Collaboration with ‘The 70 Slate’

Tuesday, 8th September 2026, at the Labadi Beach Hotel, something historic was revealed. Sparrow Studios and OldFilm Productions, two of Ghana’s finest film production studios, announced a partnership to commemorate Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027 with three films dubbed The 70 Slate: A Cinematic Celebration of Ghana at 70.

The three films are ‘The Return of Makunse’, due for release in December 2026; ‘Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green’, which will hit the cinemas in July 2027; and a modern remake of Bob Cole’s ‘I Told You So’, which will be the final film on the slate and is scheduled for release in December 2027.

The 70 Slate brings together the creative strengths of award-winning filmmakers Shirley Frimpong-Manso, CEO of Sparrow Studios, and Peter Sedufia, CEO of OldFilm Productions, in what promises to be one of the more ambitious film collaborations in Ghana’s recent history. Over the years, these two studios each independently have contributed significantly to sustaining the growth of Ghana’s film space with titles like The Perfect Picture, Adams Apple,  Keteke and AloeVera which have set and broken records in Ghana cinemas. Their decision to join forces promises to be even more monumental.

The first film, ‘The Return of Makunse’, a title that has attained almost mythical status among Ghanaian film lovers over the decade, is expected to open the slate in December 2026 with a story that explores migration, broken promises and the often complicated reality behind the dream of a better life in the diaspora.

The second film on the slate, ‘Nkrumah’s Red, Gold and Green’ takes a deep dive into the final 24 hours before the declaration of Ghana’s independence on 6th March 1957. Certainly a befitting cinematic commemoration of Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary.

The final production, a modern remake of the Ghanaian household favourite, ‘Bob Cole’s I Told You So’, is scheduled for December 2027. The project will give the 1970 music comedy a contemporary interpretation, reconnecting a significant piece of Ghanaian entertainment history with a new generation of audiences.

The 70 Slate could represent a defining moment for the Ghanaian film industry. At a time when the industry continues to search for stronger structures, bigger audiences, sustainable investment and stories capable of competing beyond our borders, the scale and ambition of this project are particularly significant.

Spearheaded by two strong forces of Ghanaian cinema, these three films, if delivered with the quality they promise, could not come at a better time. Any opportunity to reignite audience confidence, stimulate investment, create opportunities for filmmakers and talent, and strengthen Ghana’s position in the global film market should be encouraged by all and sundry.
