TeamGhanaian filmmaker Thompson Lordson has been announced as one of the few selected filmmakers to have their films screened at the prestigious FESPACO 2025, the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou which is set to take place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, from 22nd February to 1st March.
Thompson, an alumnus of the Institute of Film and Television (IFT), formerly known as NAFTI, will showcase his award-winning student film, “EBU” (Lost), marking a monumental moment as the only Ghanaian student filmmaker representing the country at this year’s festival.
FESPACO, established in 1969, is Africa’s largest and most revered film festival, celebrating excellence in African cinema and providing a platform for filmmakers across the continent to gain international exposure. The biennial event draws filmmakers, critics, and audiences from around the globe, solidifying its status as a cultural landmark for African storytelling.
“EBU” (Lost) earned the young filmmaker the honour of Best Student Film Director during his 2024 graduation from IFT. The film delves into themes of identity and resilience and has already garnered attention on the international film festival circuit. And now chalks another memorable feat as it joins the prestigious lineup at FESPACO 2025.
The filmmaker credits his success to the mentorship and guidance from his lecturers at IFT and the invaluable support of the institute’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Marian Mantey Gebara. “IFT gave me the tools and confidence to tell authentic stories that resonate globally,” Thompson shared.
IFT continues to uphold its reputation as a breeding ground for exceptional filmmakers, with alumni such as Ivan Quashigah, Shirley Frimpong Manso, Peter Sedufia, and Kyei Baffour making significant contributions to the film industry locally and internationally.
Speaking ahead of the screening, Thompson Lordson encouraged aspiring filmmakers and media enthusiasts to explore opportunities at IFT. “With dedication and the right training, dreams can be realized. IFT is the place to start that journey,” he said in a statement.
FESPACO 2025 runs from February 22 to March 1, showcasing films that highlight African culture, innovation, and resilience. The festival’s competitive categories, industry workshops, and networking opportunities make it a cornerstone event for celebrating African cinema.
Ghanaians and film enthusiasts worldwide can look forward to supporting “EBU” (Lost) and celebrating Thompson Lordson’s historic representation on this renowned stage.
