Ghanaian cinema has reached a new milestone with “The Fisherman”, produced by Kofi Owusu-Afriyie of Luu Vision Media, making its world premiere at the prestigious 81st Venice International Film Festival. Written and directed by Zoey Martinson, this film holds the honour of being Ghana’s first official selection at the renowned festival, captivating a sold-out audience and earning an enthusiastic standing ovation.
Though screened out of competition, “The Fisherman” achieved notable recognition by winning the prestigious Fellini Medal, part of the Enrico Fulchignoni Prize from UNESCO’s International Council for Film, Television, and Audiovisual Communication (ICFT). Celebrating its 36th year, this prize recognizes films that embody UNESCO’s values of peace and tolerance, underscoring the film’s universal appeal and cultural significance.
Filmmaker Zoey Martinson’s narrative, inspired by her own life in Keta, brings an authentic Ghanaian story to life, illustrating themes of resilience, community, and coastal livelihoods that reflect Ghana’s heritage. Shot entirely in Ghana, the film stars some of the country’s rising talents like Ricky Adeleyitar, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi. It also featured alongside Nigerian actor Dulo Harris. Fred Amugi, Roselyn Ngissah, Dorothy Konadu, Mynna Otoo, Adjeezay, Adwoa Akoto, Princess Fathia Nkrumah, Papa Osei, Andrew Adote, and Shadrack Agyare round out the stellar cast.
The artistic quality of “The Fisherman” is elevated by the work of a skilled team that includes, cinematography Adam Carboni, costume design’s from Gifty Mawuena Sossavi’ and production design by Douglas Baiden.
The film is edited by Jasmin Way with Avi Amon providing its poignant sound score. The film’s impressive visual effects are led by Nurudeen Tahiru and Daria Amai Shelton, with casting by Mawuko Kuadzi.
Reflecting on the Venice debut, producer Kofi Owusu-Afriyie said, “The Venice premiere was a surreal moment for us. To witness this story resonate with such a diverse audience is a triumph for Ghanaian cinema and the African film community.”
