The National Film Authority of Ghana, in partnership with Silverbird Cinemas, has announced the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit. Under the patronage of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, this year’s summit is themed “The Relevance of Cinema in African Communities”.
Following the success of the inaugural event, which brought together representatives from 20 African countries, the 2024 summit aims to build on previous accomplishments and further drive growth in the African cinema industry. Key highlights from last year included the President’s approval of the Film Tax Incentive and collaborative ventures among African nations to distribute films and enhance cinema experiences.
This year’s summit will focus on improving local content production and consumption and rethinking cinema for Africa’s mass market. The event will gather industry leaders, filmmakers, producers, distributors, and stakeholders from across the continent and beyond.
An executive steering committee featuring prominent figures from the global cinema community will lead the summit, including Ms Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, CEO of the National Film Authority of Ghana, and other industry experts.
Ms Asante reiterated the summit’s vision of transforming Africa’s cinema landscape, projecting substantial job creation and economic contributions as per the 2021 UNESCO Report.
An ‘Out Come Paper‘ for the 2023 edition of the event was also outdoors at the launch. Speaking on this, Ms Asante mentioned that the paper is intended to capture all the progress that was made at last year’s event and hopefully serve as a guide for what to build on and improve in the subsequent events.
The 2023 Out Come Paper is accessible to the public and can be downloaded here.
The Africa Cinema Summit 2024, will be held from October 7-10, 2024, at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra and promises to be a pivotal event in redefining cinema culture across the continent.
Second on my list of addictions is Movies.. the only thing I could possibly love more is my Dearest Waakye lol. Nothing else does a better job of reminding me that ANYTHING is possible with the right amount of effort. I have great eye for details and flaws in scripts. Shallow scripts bore me. I am an avid reader. Your everyday Mr Nice guy. Always the last to speak in a room full of smart people. Half Human, half Martian but full MOVIE FREAK.
