The Sound of Violet‘, a rom-com drama written and directed by Allen Wolf, brings forth a poignant narrative woven around the lives of Shawn and Violet, portrayed with depth and sincerity by Jason Trevino and Cora Cleary, respectively.

Adapted from an award-winning novel, this film navigates themes of love, faith, and the complexities of human relationships with a delicate yet impactful touch.

The film’s tells the story of Shawn who is driven by his longing to find a wife. His encounter with Violet sparks hope as he perceives her as his ideal soulmate. However, Shawn‘s autism obscures his realization that Violet is, in fact, a prostitute.

Shawn‘s pursuit of companionship, hindered by his shyness and autism, sets the stage for a journey filled with challenges and revelations. Despite his role at a dating app, he struggles to connect deeply with others, until fate leads him to Violet. Their initial encounter sparks a connection that Shawn believes to be destined, yet his autism blinds him to Violet‘s true profession as a prostitute.

Trevino delivers a compelling performance as Shawn, capturing the innocence and naivety of his character with authenticity. His portrayal skillfully navigates a wide range of emotions, drawing viewers into Shawn‘s world with sincerity and genuineness. Opposite him, Cleary shines as Violet, radiating beauty and vulnerability that evoke empathy from the audience.

The chemistry between Trevino and Cleary is palpable, as they portray the complexities of Shawn and Violet‘s relationship with depth and conviction. Their dynamic on-screen presence makes them a captivating pair, anchoring the film with their nuanced performances.

Supporting performances, particularly from Jan D’Arcy as Ruth, Shawn’s grandmother, add depth and richness to the narrative. Each character contributes to the story seamlessly, creating a cohesive ensemble that enhances the film’s overall impact.

In the midst of emotional turmoil, Shawn and Violet are forced to confront the stark realities of their situation. Their bond faces further strain when Anton (played by Michael E. Bell), Violet‘s pimp, refuses to release her, viewing her as his most lucrative asset.

While ‘The Sound of Violet‘ incorporates faith-based themes, it does so with subtlety, allowing them to complement the narrative without overpowering it. The film’s exploration of love and compassion, particularly towards individuals like Violet, serves as its strongest theme, resonating with audiences on a profound level.  Shawn’s autism, the way he handles it as well as how those around him handle is also a subject in the film that it sure to be noticed and appreciated by the viewer.

Despite its comedic elements, the film’s humor is understated, relying more on witty dialogue and Shawn‘s innocence for comedic effect. This delicate balance ensures that the film remains engaging without detracting from its underlying themes. Even if you overlook those moments, Shawn‘s naivety and innocence are bound to evoke some amusement.

In the end, ‘The Sound of Violet‘ delivers a heartfelt narrative that blends romance, comedy, and drama seamlessly. While it may not have viewers rolling on the floor with laughter, its emotional depth and sincerity leave a lasting impression.

I will score this film 6 out of 10 as it fulfils its promise of delivering a compelling story that leaves viewers both entertained and enlightened.

Towards the conclusion, the film presents startling statistics: “Over 40 million people are enslaved today, surpassing any previous era in history.” Shockingly, more than 70% of these individuals, predominantly girls and women, are likely subjected to sex trafficking. Its call to action to address the issue of modern-day slavery adds a poignant layer of relevance, encouraging viewers to reflect on the broader implications of the film’s themes.

The Sound of Violet‘ is available for streaming on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, Vudu, and Tubi, as well as on Blu-ray and DVD. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this touching tale of love, faith, and compassion.
