Ghanaian film ‘Letters of Goddo‘ has secured eight nominations in 8 categories in the 2024 edition of the prestigious Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
This adds to the yet-to-be-released film’s already impressive run after its official selection for the Toronto International Nollywood Film Festival (TINFF) held last month.
Directed by Harry BENTIL, the film “Letters To Goddo” details a profound exploration of humanity and our relationship with the divine. The story follows two university graduates who reunite under unusual circumstances, discovering a suitcase filled with money as they contemplate whether this fated response to their prayers or a test of faith.
The eight nominations across multiple highly competitive and coveted categories underscore its artistic depth and technical brilliance, positioning it as a formidable contender at this year’s awards and also possibly considering one of the stand-out films from Ghana this year.
‘Letters to Goddo‘ has earned nominations in two of the most coveted categories: “Best Film” and “Best Director“, hinting at the film’s quality and potential to compete with the best from the continent. Other notable directors and their films it would be competing with include, Daniel Emeke Oriahi (The Weekend), Kenneth Gyang (This is Lagos), and Jahmil X.T. Qubeka (The Queenstown Kings).
Harry BENTIL was also nominated for the ‘Best Debut Feature Film by a Director’, a testament to his exceptional work on this film.
The film’s cast also garnered recognition for their compelling performances. Solomon Fixon Owoo was nominated for ‘Best Actor in a Supporting Role’, while Nenesenor Abloso is in contention for ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’. Both actors are noted for their very nuanced portrayals of challenging roles and characters and it is clear that their exceptional performances in this film couldn’t go unnoticed.
The technical achievements of ‘Letters to Goddo‘ equally could not have gone unnoticed. The film’s visuals, which contribute significantly to its emotional impact, have earned it a nomination for ‘Achievement in Cinematography‘. Furthermore, the film picked up nominations for “Achievement in Screenplay” and “Achievement in Make-Up“.
All these nominations further cement the film’s standing as a well-rounded cinematic achievement, appreciated not only for its performances and visuals but also for its compelling storytelling.
The 20th edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards will happen on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the Balmoral Convention Centre, inside the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, Nigeria.
