‘Ashes of Accra’, A Ghanaian Crime Drama Ready to Shake Up Festivals

Published

on

Ghana’s indie film scene is buzzing this year thanks to ‘Ashes of Accra, a gritty new short from Organized Khaoz. Written and directed by Solomon Fixon-Owoo, the 39‑minute film is gearing up for a run on the international festival circuit.

This is a story about loyalty, betrayal, and the heavy price of power. Set mostly over one tense night, the film pits Gladstone, an old-school crime boss, against Angels, his former protégé, who turns on him in search of dignity. Their showdown inside a crumbling safe house is part confession, part interrogation, and part funeral. It’s raw, claustrophobic, and deeply human.

The film doesn’t hand out easy answers. Instead, it asks tough questions: is betrayal just greed, or is it the desperate fight for respect? Through flashbacks and sharp dialogue, we see how both men were shaped by brutal systems and mentors, making their clash feel inevitable.

Visually, ‘Ashes of Accra’ is feels rooted in Accra’s rhythms and textures, giving it a raw authenticity. And it stars an impressive host of talents including, Brian Angels as Angels, Solomon Fixon-Owoo as Gladstone, Mark Cofie Jnr. as Mr. Cofie, and Sjoerd Grueter as Uncle Tito, the manipulative kingmaker. Supporting roles from Wonder Magis, Bernard Owusu, and Kenneth Letu help flesh out the wider world.

The film is made by a dedicated team with Executive Producer Mark Cofie Jnr.  who also edited the film. Kwame Markin handles cinematography, with award-winning makeup and special effects artist Nathaniel Amewuga (Kruz K) handling the film’s needs in that department.

As it heads into festivals, ‘Ashes of Accra looks set to be one of Ghana’s boldest short films of the year, a raw, uncompromising crime tragedy that refuses to play by the rules. GhMovieFreak.com will bring you more details on this project and how it does on its festival run.

Second on my list of addictions is Movies.. the only thing I could possibly love more is my Dearest Waakye lol. Nothing else does a better job of reminding me that ANYTHING is possible with the right amount of effort. I have great eye for details and flaws in scripts. Shallow scripts bore me. I am an avid reader. Your everyday Mr Nice guy. Always the last to speak in a room full of smart people. Half Human, half Martian but full MOVIE FREAK.
