TeamThe Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) is proud to present the lineup of projects and participants for the 17th edition of Talents Durban, set to take place during the Durban FilmMart (DFM) from 19 – 22 July 2024. Among the participants hailing from 15 African countries, are three outstanding talents from Ghana.
Berlinale Talents, renowned for its role as a networking platform within the Berlin International Film Festival, finds its African equivalent in Talents Durban. This platform is tailored to suit the unique needs and challenges faced by emerging filmmakers across the African continent.
Magdalene Reddy, Director of DFMI, underscores the institute’s dedication to fostering African cinema through strategic partnerships and access to global networks. Talents Durban stands as a testament to this commitment, providing a platform for budding filmmakers, animators, and film critics to thrive.
This year’s edition of Talents Durban showcases the rich diversity of African cinema with a selection of 26 projects and 4 film critics. Notably, participants from Ghana bring their unique perspectives and talents to the forefront of this vibrant gathering.
The selected participants will engage in a range of developmental programs tailored to enhance their skills and project development. Mentors such as Mounia Aram, Jihane Bougrine, and Hawa Essuman will offer invaluable guidance and expertise to the participants, including those representing Ghana.
Here are the three talented participants from Ghana and their respective projects:
Fofo “Togbe” Gavua
Fofo “Togbe” Gavua, a distinguished film director and editor based in Accra, Ghana, is known for his unique blend of cultural influences in filmmaking. Raised between Ghana and Canada, Fofo’s journey in film began with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Ghana, followed by training at the Vancouver Film School. His debut feature film, “Lucky,” released in 2018, earned critical acclaim and established him as a creative force in the industry. Fofo’s diverse portfolio includes impactful short films like ‘Mami’ and music videos for renowned artists. His upcoming project, ‘Langalanga,’ promises to further push creative boundaries and resonate across cultures.
Tony Asankomah
Tony Asankomah is a film critic, creative writer, and the visionary behind GhMoviefreak.com – Ghana’s leading platform for film reviews and promotions. With his insightful critiques and passion for cinema, Tony has become a prominent voice in the Ghanaian film scene, contributing to the growth and recognition of local and international cinema.
Michael Ansah
Michael Ansah, a filmmaker from Accra, Ghana, has dedicated years to bringing underrepresented African stories to light. His notable work includes the completion of his first short documentary titled ‘Life in Limbo’ in 2022. Notably, Michael was among the three African filmmakers shortlisted for the One World Media Global Short Docs Forum in 2023.
These talented individuals from Ghana represent the vibrant and diverse landscape of African cinema, showcasing their unique perspectives and contributions to the global film industry.
